Winfield
Scott Stratton |

|
July 22, 1848 - September 14, 1902 |

|
The Cripple Creek Gold Mining
District's wealthiest and most intriguing gold baron. |
STRATTON'S INDEPENDENCE,
LIMITED |

|
Issued September 19, 1900,
uncancelled. Signed by Theo. R.W. Baker and F. S. G. Drury, as
directors. Signed by Hy Richards, as secretary. One of the Cripple Creek District's most important gold
mines. Oversized certificate. There were no stock issues on the Independence Mine of
Cripple Creek, Colorado when W. S. Stratton owned this excellent gold
producer. The only issues available are those associated with the British
mining company known as Stratton's Independence, Limited. This is the
first issue for this famous Cripple Creek gold mine.

Stratton's
Independence, Limited Trustee's Certificate, #282, dated October 11,
1899, uncancelled. The above is the only known example of American
stock certificate issue for the British company that was formed to
purchase W.S. Stratton's highly productive Independence Mine, near the
City of Victor in the Cripple Creek Gold Mining District,
Colorado. Up until now, there has only been speculation as to
whether or not there was actually an American issue for the British
company that had acquired W.S. Stratton's Independence Mine. This
gold mining property was famous throughout America in the late 1890s; in
fact, so famous Thomas A. Edison personally asked Stratton for an ore
sample from the Independence. This certificate ranks as one of the
scarcest and most desirable for any Cripple Creek, Colorado collection.
Condition:
very good; the top edge of this certificate is chipped and has been
stabilized with curatorial materials.

THE LONDON VENTURE CORPORATION, LIMITED |

The
parent company that purchased Stratton's famous Independence Mine; and
then proceeded to exhaust the reserves Stratton had thoughtfully blocked
out for future extraction. |
Issued February 18, 1909,
uncancelled. Parent company of Stratton's Independence, Limited.
The London Venture Corporation, Limited, as owned other Colorado mining
companies, such The Camp Bird, Limited and the Tomboy Gold Mines, Limited.
British corporation. Oversized certificate. |
THE PORTLAND GOLD MINING COMPANY |

|
Issued February 20, 1895; cancelled. Issued for 250,000 shares to
W.S. Stratton, as treasurer of
the Portland Gold Mining Company. Signed by James F. Burns, as president; and, Frank G. Peck,
as secretary. Incorporated in Iowa; corporate seal affixed in Colorado
Springs. The Portland Company's property was located adjacent to the
Independence on Battle Mountain. Stratton was well aware of
Colorado's apex laws and decided it best to become part owner of the
Portland as opposed to going into litigation with it. |
Check issued and signed by
W.S. Stratton, on an account in
the Exchange National Bank, December 29, 1901. |

|
Issued to James Doyle and signed by Doyle on
the back. Doyle was a co-discoverer of the Portland Mine, along with James
F. Burns and John Harnan. |

THE
GOLD CRATER MINING COMPANY |

|
THE
GOLD CRATER MINING COMPANY, issued November 16, 1899, uncancelled, in
fine condition. This certificate represents Stratton's overall
vision of his pursuit of the of "the golden core" of the
Cripple Creek Mining District. This endeavor, based on geological
evidence, was intended to follow the seven major geyser-like vents that
emanated from deep within the earth's crust. Stratton believed if
he pursued these vents underground to a point where all seven would
unite, then he would uncover a "chimney" of gold. |
