Colorado’s
Leadville Mining District reveled in an illustrious and productive life
during America’s romantic age of precious metal mining. With
the discovery in 1874 of gold in California Gulch, glass-plate
photographers endeavored to establish successful studios in the new mining
district. Few photographers
lasted more than a couple of years; however, there were those with enough
artistic merit and business tenacity to exhibit a significant presence in
the area for a long period of time. In
1884, Alfred Brisbois advertised himself as “The Leading Photographer of
Leadville, Colo.” in Corbett & Ballinger’s Sixth Annual Leadville
City Directory, while Edward Clements, a block down Harrison Avenue from
Brisbois’ studio, only modestly listed his business.
And Wellington O. Luke, also located on Harrison Avenue, simply
listed his presence in the district.
Of course, one of Colorado’s premier photographers, William Henry
Jackson, whose studio was in Denver, made enough excursions to the region
to compose an extensive catalogue of Leadville photographs.
In 1904, only three photographers advertised in the Ballenger &
Richards’ Leadville directory, none of whom were in the city in 1884.
Over the decades, there had been close around forty-five various
photographic studios in the Leadville Silver Mining District, all working
to make an important and lasting contribution.
Below are 75 original photographic examples of their skill and
innovation. |
