THE
FREE COINAGE GOLD MINING COMPANY, 1900 |
|
|
The
Free Coinage Gold Mining Company, Check #266, August 4, 1900, signed by
Sam Strong as Treasurer, issued to Stephen Blair and signed by Blair on
the back; also countersigned by John B. Neville. Check is issued
on the Free Coinage Company's account at the First National Bank,
Cripple Creek, Colorado.
Sam
Strong was a friend of W. S. Stratton who also was successful with
locating producing gold mines in the Cripple Creek Gold Mining
District. Strong owned the Free Coinage Mine with his friend, Sam
Altman, the founder of the Town of Altman in the Cripple Creek
District. Strong also owned the Strong Mine at the edge of Victor,
Colorado. Sam Strong, a gambler and rather boisterous man, found
himself embroiled in a fight with the owner of the Newport Saloon, J.
Grant Crumley, in the City of Cripple Creek on the night of August 22,
1901. Strong became threatening over a small debt and Crumley
responded by unloading his shotgun into Strong. Sam Strong died
instantly.
This
check was issued to Stephen Blair, a Colorado Springs carpenter and also
a friend of W. S. Stratton. Blair followed Stratton up to the
newly formed Cripple Creek Gold Mining District in 1891 and located the
Buena Vista claim near Bull Cliffs. This property became part of
the highly productive Isabella Gold Mining Company. Blair signed
this check on the back.
John
B. Neville countersigned this check. Neville was Sam Strong's
father-in-law. After Strong married Regina J. Neville, her father,
John, became involved with many of Sam Strong's mining concerns in the
Cripple Creek Gold District. THE
