Signed by Ben Hecht. Near fine in very good plus original dust jacket.
Illustrated by Herman Rosse; with a preface by Henry Justin Smith,
Hecht's newspaper editor. Stories of life in Chicago, many of
which became the basis of Hecht's screenplays. |
1922, Covici - McGee: Chicago, Limited edition, 2000 copies, Fine in near fine dust jacket,
signed by Ben Hecht. Illustrated by Wallace Smith, who was
influenced by Aubrey Beardsley. A book of tirades with an erotic
bent, intentionally written to inflame censors. The United States
Postal Service filed legal suit against Ben Hecht, Wallace Smith, and
the publishers to prevent this book be sent through the mails.
Clarence Darrow was hired by Hecht to fight the court battles. The
book did what Hecht intended: gain him a great degree of publicity. |

Ben Hecht's most famous compositions: a play about his journalism days
in Chicago. THE FRONT PAGE was a Broadway success, and then
inspired several movie versions, including MY GIRL FRIDAY.
